An affiliate article can become misleading even when its text has not changed: a product disappears, a destination redirects or a plan no longer includes the recommended feature. Treat link maintenance as part of the editorial work, not merely a technical cleanup.
Create a small inventory
Record the article URL, destination, merchant, product, last review date and reason for the recommendation. Include links inside buttons, images and comparison tables. Keep the commercial destination separate from the tracking link so a redirect can be checked against the intended product.
Inspect the visitor journey
Open the page as a reader on desktop and mobile. Confirm that the link reaches the expected product and that any region selection does not change the recommendation. A successful HTTP response alone cannot prove the destination is correct. Check whether the article’s instructions still match the landing page.
Reassess the recommendation
Compare current compatibility and limitations with the use case described. If the product no longer fits, update the reasoning before replacing the URL. Do not silently substitute a higher-paying alternative. Preserve the explanation of who should avoid buying, and label any hands-on testing accurately.
Reconcile reporting without creating fake sales
Use the merchant’s permitted testing process when checking attribution. Do not place artificial orders or encourage prohibited self-referrals. Compare approved transactions with your own outbound-click records at an aggregate level. Differences may reflect consent, attribution rules or timing rather than a broken link.
Prioritize the next review
Start with pages that receive meaningful traffic or contain time-sensitive claims. Record what changed and schedule a new review according to the volatility of the product. A maintained shortlist of useful articles is easier to trust than a growing collection of forgotten recommendations. Keep an editorial removal option when no suitable replacement exists.
